As you know, we are big believers in the routine dental checkup! There are so many things we can accomplish with this appointment, that’s it’s difficult for us to imagine anyone NOT making it a priority! After all, your overall health is directly linked to your oral health!
However, we know that there are some in our community who cannot make it to the dental office due to their financial situation. We do what we can to help those in need, and one such opportunity is coming up in about a month. You can be a part of it!
On May 2, 2015, your very own Dr. Smith will be participating in a Dancing with the Stars-type event called Dancing with a Mission. The purpose of the event is to raise money to help the homeless of Kansas City get the medical and dental treatment that they need!
Living Without a Home
Most of us have never had to experience the trials of living on the street. Each day is a matter of survival for these folks, which puts something like dental treatment on the very back burner. Without an income, how would you be able to take care of your teeth?
Aside from dental appointments, how would you manage to care for your teeth on a daily basis? Brushing, flossing, etc are not an immediate matter of life and death, so we can assume it doesn’t happen for these folks.
The Long-Term Consequences
Unfortunately, we know from research that there are long-term consequences for poor oral health. It plays a role in the rest of your body. The bacteria from your gums travel throughout the body and infect areas like your heart, brains, liver, etc. This results in an increased risk for heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, trouble maintaining diabetes, and many, many more things.
A Great Opportunity
This Dancing with a Mission event is a great way for us to pull together as a community and do some good for the homeless who live practically in our backyard! We can’t wait to see how well Dr. Smith does in the dancing contest, but we are really excited to see what happens with all of the money raised!
After this event last year, the World Outreach Foundation was able to provide dental and health care to over 1,000 people in Kansas City! Can you imagine the impact of 1,000 newly healthy smiles?
